Oya Paya – Focus

Who are Oya Paya? Well according to them, they are “a smelly group of 20 somethings making spicy music”. Oya Paya is comprised of Maxime McGowan (singer and guitarist), Saam Jafarzadeh (bassist and producer) and Ashwin Menon (drummer). The trio, based in Liverpool have a patchwork of Singaporean, French, Iranian and English cultures which surely influences their work and adds the spice we adore so much.

An interesting fact, which merits mention, is the extraordinary way in which the track Focus was conceived and brought to life. During the Corona Virus lockdown phase, the group’s members were separated by over 7000 miles. Not ones to be deterred, the trio set about recording in different locations before bringing it all together. And bring it together they did!

Starting off with a guitar riff and the vocals being breathed, this track quickly multiplies in intensity with the addition of the drums before a slightly psychedelic undertone is introduced at the 35 second mark. McGowan conveys more urgency in the vocals and before you know it, the slight nodding movement you were making with your head quickly becomes a head banging session! Got to love that!
