Late Night Pharmacy – Too Late for the Rickshaws
Too Late for the Rickshaws by Late Night Pharmacy sheds light on a raw piece of society, a dark social parallel universe but yet still human. There is no judgment here, only a story about some people’s different reality. Sometimes you know when this downward spiral started, sometimes you wonder how to escape or if you could. So put your headphones on and wave your hand!
The Irish band Late Night Pharmacy delivers a genuine piece of indie rock with Too Late for the Rickshaws. The song is based on lead guitarist Fionn Murray’s experience discussing life with two drug addicts coming home one night. “‘Too Late for the Rickshaws’ was written during Dublin’s second lockdown. I was taking a tram home and got talking with two drug addicts in their forties, who told me about their lives. The conversation served as the inspiration for the lyrics. We also drew from my experiences visiting Cloverhill prison in Clondalkin to play Christmas carols and religious music for the inmates,” explains Fionn to headphonik.
What I really like about the lyrics is the simple fact that Late Night Pharmacy tells you a human story, without any judgment or even compassion, just two people’s story who happened to have entered the wrong door in life one day. Probably for reasons which are just as sad.
The Dublin located band Late Night Pharmacy is composed of Rob Maguire on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Fionn Murray on lead guitar and backing vocals, Michael Spence on bass and Bastiaan van Nijlen on drums. It’s a real discovery for me, but undoubtedly one I will remember.
Too Late for the Rickshaws has a mesmerising chorus and the whole track is very well balanced. On the rhythmic side, the impactful drum & bass is a pure delight (come on, listen to these bass staccatos supported by the kick drum on the verse! Be-a-u-ti-ful!). It takes you right to the core of the song. Then comes the melodic guitars, mostly in clear sound, adding such an atmospheric layer to the song, changing the colour of it verse after verse. That lays the perfect musical foundation for Rob Maguire’s superb voice, singing that aforementioned story with authenticity.
These young guys will go far, I’m telling you. If you like indie rock, then add Too Late for the Rickshaws right away in your playlist and keep an ear out for Late Night Pharmacy!
