Cinders – Still Alive

“2020” and “lockdown”. Two words the majority of us would like to forget asap. Remember these moments where you asked yourself if you were still alive? The same moments where, beyond the slow desintegration of your energy and social life, something far more important was taken from you, like ripped pieces of your humanity… and that thing was, hope.
The only way to get out of this rotten circle is to hold on to small things, details, and, in this context, a band held on music and songwriting to offer us a very optimistic song, full of sun and vitamin D! Still Alive is the tenth single of the excellent album No One’s Home from Cinders, released in 2021, way better than coffee or a slap in the face, so put your headphones on and breathe in loudly!

What I personally love about Still Alive is the crescendo of intensity. Basically, you’d probably start listening to the song, totally limp on your couch (some do, ok?), and when the last note resonates, you’ll find yourself screaming at your fully open window with positivity running in your veins!
This is mostly due to the incredible vocals in this track, so… alive! But the drumming part is absolutely be-a-u-ti-ful. A masterpiece. And I’m not saying this because I play drums myself, nope. Starting with rimshots and finishing with an explosion of the full set, it’s a pure delight.
The trio from Salt Lake City composed of drummer Brad Bennett, bassist Adrian De La Cruz, and guitarist/vocalist Montana Smith, delivers a real treasure with No One’s Home and Still Alive is the last gem on the golden cake.

Fire burns to smoke and fills my lungs up
While it blinds my eyes
I do believe I’ve earned much better
But I am still alive
Weak and strong each have their moments
You just have to recognize
One brings heartache, but the other’s why
You’re still alive

Still Alive is a manifesto of positive attitude. About the album’s title, Smith explained: “For us, [No One’s Home] was kind of a double meaning. On one hand, the title refers to a time when we were all stuck inside our homes in lockdown for the COVID-19 pandemic. On the other hand, it’s, ‘the idea of trying, dancing, and singing like no one is home’. Nobody is there to tell you not to do it, or to tell you you’re doing it too loud.

Even though the inspiration for this album came from a dark era, De La Cruz simply added that the main idea which drove them through the whole marvel for our ears was “Let’s get out and recreate what we had before”.

So, shall we?
