Why Bonnie – Galveston – Indie rock
The sandy shores of Galveston, an island city resort off the coast of Texas, is the inspiration behind Why Bonnie‘s track suitably tilted Galveston. If you don’t already know this holiday town then, Galveston by Why Bonnie will put it on your radar. This hazy number is perfect to accompany you to the beach during those hot summer days or nights. So put your headphones on, grab a towel and your boom box, it’s off to Galveston we go.
The melancholic guitar hashing coupled with the rippling, swelling keyboard sounds forge a nostalgic feel to the song Galveston by Why Bonnie. The pulsating drums create momentum, quicker for the refrain and slower for the verses. The bass brings that hint of groove, tying everything together to produce a harmoniously smooth, warm soundscape. The sweet, melodious vocals incite a certain longing, wistful sentiment.
Candyland beaches
Water too salty to swim
Passed all of the dancehalls and dive-ins
Looks just the same as it did back then
But we lost the pier to hurricane season.
The insightful lyrics compound the idea of nostalgia, memories of past holidays and visits to the beach. Reminiscing of the taste of the salty sea water, the lawn chairs and even the loss of the pier, bring the recollection to life. About the song Galveston, Why Bonnie stated that the song is, “An ode to Galveston, Texas — the capital of ghosts and good memories. One of the most literal recollections of growing up in Southeast Texas, ‘Galveston’ is a snapshot of an old childhood haunt.”
Why Bonnie was formed by singer-songwriter Blair Howerton, whose childhood memories formed the song Galveston. Many of the group’s songs were written by Howerton, which she has stockpiled over a number of years. She teamed up with a childhood friend, Kendall Powell who plays keys as well as Sam Houdek on guitar, Josh Malett on drums and Chance Williams on bass. This Austin, Texas based quintet have evolved from bedroom dream pop to a more raw, cutting edge rock influence, and boy do we like their vibe!
Galveston is Why Bonnie‘s most recent release and is yet to be attributed to an EP or album. This in itself is good news, as of course it suggests that there is more to come from Why Bonnie in the not too distant future. In the meantime, don’t forget to check out Why Bonnie‘s past works while of course keeping a look out for future instalments.
