Dani Mack – Fleabag

Fleabag from Dani Mack is about guilt. Have you ever done something that you know was not 100% true to your values and, a bit later, a little voice kept resonating in your head, saying “Arf… come on, it did not kill anybody, plus it’s not that serious, am I free or what?
You did, didn’t you? Cheeky you. Well, then, put your headphones on, listen to Fleabag and shout your freedom out loud!

Dani Mack is actually a duo composed of Baylee Barrett and Chris Reagan. This project was founded by the first part of the tandem (Baylee) and she named it after her father’s first and middle name, I guess as a tribute, so we now know there is a Dani Mack Barrett in this world and we send him our greetings.

Fleabag is the latest release of Dani Mack and their second one this year after Someday which was launched in April. The indie rock song has something grungy and punky in it which I love. It reminds me of some of Nirvana‘s stuff, especially when listening to this heavy bass riff played with a pick, I can picture Krist Novoselic playing it!
Also, the vocal performance of Baylee Barrett is awesome and will, for sure, make you jump out of this chair.

The lyrics deal with the increasing gap which exists between some religious principles and contemporary social life, and specifically the guilt young people have to sometimes manage after taking decisions against these principles.
‘Fleabag’ has layers to it,” says Baylee Barrett. “In simplest terms, which most can relate to, it’s a nod to dating and how downright terrible it is. On a deeper level, it’s a song about my own sexual repression and difficulties with casual relationships. I grew up a devout Christian and letting go of the guilt that was instilled in me from such a young age is still something I struggle with. That being said, dating for fun is really hard for me. There’s still a little part of me that’s afraid that come Judgment Day, I’m not getting into those pearly gates because I had premarital sex with some with some guy from a dating app.

Freedom lies in being bold” – Robert Frost.
