The Lost Messiahs – Brownsfield

How often would you like to escape reality? Brownsfield from the Irish band The Lost Messiahs will let you follow your dreams. This mystical song will draw the path from your ordinary to your extraordinary world, your secret garden. Except that it is a whole field here, so you’ve got even more space to landscape! Put your headphones on now, press play and open that spiritual door… oh and if you see a door with a yellow head on a black background, please do come in, I heard the owner has good music to share…

The Lost Messiahs from Portlaoise, Ireland, are James O’ Connor (vocals & acoustic guitar), Eamonn Duff (bass), Martha Cummins (drums) and Ollie Plunkett (electric guitar). The Lost Messiahs were originally formed by Ollie, who is also the songwriter. Brownsfield, released on April 7th this year, will be part of their third LP to come.

And guess what? That place does exist. Yep. Ollie explained to headphonik: “The song was written about a field called Brownsfield that was across from my childhood home. Though just an ordinary field, this blank landscape offered a young adolescent [young Ollie, in case you were not following] a canvas to create an imaginary world. Everyone has their own Brownsfield, their escape from the ordinary into the extraordinary.

3 things really stood out for me in Brownsfield. I mean… apart from the fact that it is well produced and that I love the atmospheric style of this band.

First, there is this mesmerising guitar riff. These notes will haunt you in your nights, believe me. So well found. It helps design the ethereal feeling of the tune (alongside a very clever drum&bass coordination and solid foundation) but it’s also the reference point of the whole (long) intro.

The second thing I noticed the most (and liked) is that crescendo climax which is slowly built. Brownsfield is the kind of song you start humming and you finish singing… loud. I could imagine myself at a concert of The Lost Messiahs and scream my lungs out. Yep. I don’t sing, I scream.

The third and most beautiful, emotional, goosebumping… thing to me, was the voices! Brownsfield features Iza Fitzgerald who sings alongside James O’Connor and… wow… The combination of James’s deep tessitura with Iza’s pristine vocal range starting at 1:17 made me stop for a second. Incredible. The two work so well together. A pure delight for the ears.

We already published Searching in Mirrors and Place in my Heart from The Lost Messiahs and I’m sure there will be a lot more to come! Keep a spot in your favourite playlist for them.
Brownsfield came out with a great music video, make sure to check it out too.

Lyrics

Going down to Brownsfield, when I was just a kid
Going down to Brownsfield, when I was just a kid
Strangest thing now, it all seems like a dream
Strangest thing now, it all seems like a dream

Going down to Brownsfield ,escape reality
Going down to Brownsfield ,escape reality
Strangest thing now, it all seems like a dream
Strangest thing now, it all seems like a dream

All of the time spent waiting for the future to come
All of the time spent waiting for the future to come
Change
All of the time, all of the time, waiting , waiting

I was lost out in the field, I was holding on to hope, I was desperate for
salvation, I was in my private world
And I escaped reality if only for a time and I was lucky all the while I had God on my side
