Volume up? Check. Safe jumping and head-bobbing environment? Check. Ok, now you’re ready to play Julia by Vox Rea and scream/sing (scring? Sorry…) along! That single is dynamite, you’ll love it. That bass line will take control of your body and you better let go. So put your headphones on and make that haircut messy!

You may know them under the name “The Katherines”, who released their debut album named To Bring You My Heart in 2017. Well, Kate Kurdyak (lead vocals/piano/guitar/violin) and Lauren Kurdyak (vocals/piano/percussion), Vancouver-based artists, are back, since 2020, under the moniker Vox Rea.
On their website, they have written: “The new name’s intentional ambiguity allowed for an identity beyond the stereotype of being labelled a “girl-band” and represents the reclamation of their creative control.”
When I listen to Julia, believe me, I don’t really have the Spice Girls (Sporty Spice was my favourite) in mind, I’m just enjoying a good indie rock track!

And that’s exactly what Vox Rea told headphonik: “Julia is a headbanger for hopeless romantics. We wrote this song about a relationship with something that you know is bad for you, but you keep coming back for more.”
And I can tell now, Vox Rea is really really bad for me. So bad…

Julia starts like a truck engine with a fat distorted bass, rapidly joined by a solid drum rhythm. Kate’s voice, low tessiture during verses and high one for choruses, with constant backing vocals (from Lauren I imagine) is mesmerising. If you add a nice lil guitar solo at the end, the 2 minutes and 47 seconds of this song will end up feeling so short. It’s addictive!

If, like me, you have been caught by Vox Rea’s creativity, I have good news for you. They have released a full album in 2022. Also, in 2023, Vox Rea will be showcasing at SXSW.
So, go ahead and check this indie-pop-rock-but-not-a-girl-band out now!
