Swatkins – Until I Get Back

Until I Get Back from Swatkins is a little piece of funk which will make these bottom cheeks of yours firmer as you won’t stop moving them on the groovy tune. It’s called “Funky Gym” and Swatkins will be your instructor. So put your headphones on and sweat it out baby!

The first time I listened to Until I Get Back from Swatkins, I thought “What the funk? Who is that guy???”. Yeah, I know, shame on me, but come on, there are too many great artists in this world to know all of them!
So I googled.
I looked at the pictures page and then I thought “What? Has Joe Cocker been reincarnated?”
That cap, that beard, that voice! Although, I must say, Joe Cocker was more a blues/rock singer…
Anyway, I was even more ashamed of myself when I read that Steve Watkins aka Swatkins from Portland, Oregon, has played with bands/projects I love such as Vulfpeck or Scary Pockets. It’s true we find this same funky feel-good spirit in his work.
Also, that new generation of great instrumentalists do not rely (too much) on computers and it gives such a nice genuine feeling to their art, not to mention amazing live shows.

Until I Get Back is like the perfect groovy dish where, Swatkins the Cook, put a little bit of spicy drums with the famous 16th notes on the hi-hat which got my attention right from the nice intro. He then sprinkled some of that minimalist-but-so-efficient bass which follows the keyboard in most of the fills and hammers these two low D notes constantly. Next, he added those tasty staccato guitar notes with a clear sound which season some fills as well. All of these make a solid foundation for the main ingredient: the savory keyboard, using the 60s hammond organ sound until it exploded in a delectable synthesizer solo at 3:37.
Serve it with appetising vocals (Swatkins and backing vocals) and your musical palate will ask for more!

Swatkins is a full time member of Excellent Gentlemen, Allen Stone and Juno What?! and launched a few years ago a new project called The Positive Agenda.
