The Landing – No Such Thing as Normal

Are you normal? Are we normal? According to Jon Bell aka The Landing, there is No Such Thing as Normal. Clearly, the New-York based artist has his own galaxy, the Funky Way. Listen to this groovy track, oh and don’t worry, if your toes start moving and your head is bobbing, it’s completely normal. So put your headphones on and keep being abnormal!

The song starts with a B-movie horror sound and includes some Scooby-Doo-like scary melodies as it was composed last Halloween. And, of course, the title, No Such Thing as Normal, apart from being a real metaphysical question, is related to the treat or trick period. Are Wookiees (yes, I’m a fan too), Monsters, Zombies, Vampires really less normal than your colleague or your neighbour?
The Landing explains about No Such Thing as Normal: “I wrote this song last Halloween season, at nearly the height of the pandemic, with the intention of turning fear into funk – using hidden subliminal sounds from some of my favorite horror movies I attempted to brew pop sensibilities with discordant progressions and optimistic lyrics with gothic harmonies.“

I can tell you those keyboard layers and arrangements combined with this electronic bass have the power of a few energy drinks and you won’t stop shaking that booty of yours.
The Landing is a classically trained musician and when you listen carefully, No Such Thing as Normal is full of delightful little arrangements, mainly on synth but also on the vocals with an octave effect (or a fifth maybe?) and on the guitar. A very well constructed piece of pure funk.
