PWNT – Days in the Summer

Kosta Galanopoulos aka PWNT takes us to the beach with the single Days in the Summer. Can you smell the ocean? Feel the warm sand under your feet? Not only PWNT teleports us there but also back to the 60s, where the beaches were cleaner and when some people were singing Sea, Sex and Sun! That’s right… take that cocktail menu… now put your headphones on and don’t forget the sunscreen!

Days in the Summer is the third track of the eponymous album from the L.A. session musician and songwriter PWNT which was released in 2021. It’s a funky and sunny ode to beach holidays, and, I must admit, lyrically, the theme is easily recognisable:

I’m looking forward to the days in the summer
I got beaches in Bahamas
White sand up in my toes, it’s snowing here
You got boats in the water
They run deep like no other
And all the sunken ships are waiting

Obvious, isn’t it? Told you.
This [Days in the Summer] was another track that I cut at my studio in LA and took to the Miami recording session with me,” explains Kosta. “At the time I was hanging at this bungalow for a few weeks and was engulfed by lots of greens and blues, warm weather, you know… all those feels. Summer feelings. Sandy feet and unbuttoned shirts.

Unfortunately, we’ll never know what the sunken ships are waiting for… damn…

Musically, Days in the Summer is a groovy gem. Close your eyes and you will have the impression to wear a bright orange top with flashy green bell bottoms pants, in the middle of psychedelic 60s. There is even a catchy transverse flute solo for my mother’s sake!!! Yes, just like in Stairway to Heaven from Led Zeppelin.
And the end of the track is fade-out… I mean… who else does this nowadays? PWNT is just a pure genius to me.
Every detail in this song is so well crafted to match this hippy era. It’s impressive. The sound is sculpted element by element: the tacky (but yet wonderful) synthesizers, the haunting bass line, the distended skin of the snare drum and the bright hi-hat… and… and… that funky flute! Even the effects on the voice is a time slap on your contemporary cheek!

In his album, Days in the Summer (the whole record this time), PWNT (by the way it’s an acronym standing for “Play What’s Not There” from Miles Davis quote) succeeded to bring something new in every track without conceding any ground on the funkness and sound quality.
So, while you are learning (or revising) your Frug, Twist and Swim steps, play PWNT’s album Days in the Summer!
