Gundelach – Riverside

Gundelach is often described as “The Prince of Melancholia” and his style of music is a mix between introverted darkness to spirited lightness. When you listen to Riverside, you couldn’t agree more, the song starts with Gundelach‘s high pitch voice and dramatic keyboard but very quickly a drum and bass groove comes to support it and you find yourself alternating between good and sad vibes all along but without knowing why.
This is even more highlighted when the groove stops and then restarts via a keyboard crescendo, like an emotion cycle.
Unconsciously, you’re grasping a sense of gravity in the lyrics, like a poetic cry, a call for help. I only completely found out what these feelings were when I read what Gundelach himself said about his experience:

I wrote Riverside ten years ago, and my life was quite different back then. I had just come out of a very heavy depression and was going through painful heartbreak. The lyrics are metaphorical, reflecting the state of my mental health at the time ‚

you didn’t see how I went under and‚
I didn’t see how you were left above.

And the edge of the river is that middle ground where you can meet, watching a person from afar, observing someone you love that doesn’t love you anymore. But I saw you by the riverside…

Riverside is a genuine emotional piece of music and I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.
