Ben Zaidi delivers a very poetic ode to life’s dark moments in Ben Zaidi’s Blues. Lyrically, the song reminds me of a journey through the human psyché, both individual and collective, in a traumatic context. Musically, however, the pace of this track brings continuous positivity and dynamism which lead to energetic vibes. So put your headphones on and keep moving forward!

When you first listen to Ben Zaidi’s Blues, the first element that catches your attention is the technical mastery of the drummer on the snare drum. The rhythm and structure of Ben Zaidi’s Blues is actually not a traditional blues but more a blues-rock ballad where drums and bass act as an engine, pulling the listener forward constantly. You are instantly embarked in this musical flow. Then, after a short while, the lyrics make their way to your mind and you realise Ben Zaidi is offering you something genuine. Naked.

“I think I find something exhilarating about just nakedly stating things as they come,” Ben Zaidi said at Atwood Magazine not long ago. Although the New-York based artist who grew up in Seattle has a very wise approach on trauma: “A lot of artists I know battle with the idea that you have to be unhappy to have things to write about. And I think that’s dangerous. Once you start making something beautiful out of pain, then it presents the idea that you need pain to make art out of, so that’s always a trap. I definitely get caught thinking that sometimes, and I’ve tried to avoid making bad decisions just to increase my suffering. I feel like there’s enough. There’s enough that just happens in the person’s life without going out of your way to make it worse.”

Ben Zaidi’s Blues is a truly original and creative piece. It is wonderfully musically structured including subtle nuances and, in my opinion, attests a real rhythm research that I have not seen much of recently. If you add to it the very strong storytelling side of it, you get a little musical gem!

Ben Zaidi just released in 2022 his debut album called Acre of Salt, including Ben Zaidi’s Blues as track #2. Make sure you give this awesome LP a listen and please, stay pure!
