The Bobby Lees – Monkey Mind

Monkey Mind from The Bobby Lees is about having a discussion with your negative mind. Minds are like keys really. A guy from the Pixies told me one day he did not remember where he put his, they can be heavy or light, they can be a perfect fit or they can be wrong. You can change them, especially if they are dirty or broken and some say they are both related to doors somehow. Anyway, put your headphones on and talk to your inner voice!

Monkey Mind will appear on The Bobby Lees’ 13-song album called Bellevue which will be released on October 7th. All 13 tracks of this forthcoming album have been recorded live. I love that spirit.

The Bobby Lees are composed of Sam Quartin on vocals/guitar, Macky Bowman on drums, Kendall Wind on bass and Nick Casa on guitar. Their music is in the same vein as the garage punk we used to hear a lot in the 90s or end of 70s. It is, at the same time, raw, energetic and beautiful. As beautiful as the word “Bellevue” which reminds me more of real-estate vocabulary than a punk album but… Sam Quartin explained recently, “I named the album Bellevue because when I listen back, I hear someone going through that stuff, who is now able to laugh about it and have fun re-telling the stories. It’s a reminder for me that the most painful and intense things I go through end up being the most rewarding creatively.“

Monkey Mind, for instance, is about the fight one could have with oneself. These moments when pain is present but sometimes necessary.

That monkey mind, he likes to eat himself alive
I think he’s done, and then he takes another bite
Now I see, I gotta learn to be kind
To my monkey mind, cause he’ll be with me till I die
