Adia Victoria – Magnolia Blues

Magnolia Blues is the first single from the recently released EP A Southern Gothic by Adia Victoria. Listening to this number is like being told a story and Victoria’s vocals effortlessly evoke a range of emotions throughout the story. A feeling of vulnerability starts with the acoustic guitar quickly followed by a haunting austere violin and a resonant drum beat. Now the story has begun…

I followed you into the blue and north into the cold
You led me off my land, you led me far from home
I tried to be the kinda girl who never needed shit
I gave you all my light and I got nothing to show for it

As the song continues, a feeling of anger creeps up on you before a subtle but distinct turning of the tables where a defiant Victoria, accompanied by a soul-stirring orchestra, seemingly reclaims control.

Referring to the song Magnolia Blues, Adia Victoria, a Southern Carolina born and raised artist who is currently based in Nashville, once explained, “The magnolia tree has become an integral symbol of Southern myth-making, romanticism, the lost cause of the Confederates and the whitewashing of Southern memory. Magnolia Blues is a reclamation of the magnolia tree, of this Southern symbol and the lies it has defended.” She continues to state, “This song is at the centre of a black woman’s furious quest to find her way back to the South in the shadow of her Magnolia.“
