Daughter – Run

The riveting Bonnie and Clyde style story line coupled with the ever changing musical dynamics of the song Run by Daughter, provide all the ingredients for a strong sentimental piece of music! The electric guitar accompanied by an acoustic guitar and smooth story-telling vocals slowly lead to a crescendo when joined by the drums and others before taking stock with a diminuendo, then the cycle starts again… Equally, the wavering nuances add to the excitement of this indie folk marvel.

The London based band Daughter, composed of Elena Tonra (song-writer, vocals, guitar, bass and piano), Igor Haefeli (guitar, base, keyboards and programming) and Remi Aguilella (drums, percussion and sampling pad) formed in 2010. The trio are multi-cultural with Tonra being a North London native, Heafeli a Swiss native and Aguilella from France. The song Run was one of their first, appearing on their self released EP Demos. Yes, it is an oldie but a goodie, but I am sure you will agree it’s a classic.

While I put on my shoes
He will button his coat
And we will step outside
Checking that the coast is clear on both sides
‘Cause we don’t wanna be seen
Oh, this is suicide
But you can’t see the ropes

The elaborate lyrics take us on an adventure of a troubled couple on the run. Tonra once told the Irish Examiner in an article that, “…I never tell anyone what my songs are about, … . I feel they are direct enough, anyway. They aren’t especially obscure.” Whatever your take on the song is, it certainly left me wanting more from Daughter!
