Benedikt – In The Mirror

The tension of the cello debuts this song, In the Mirror by Benedikt, and continues throughout. The smooth storytelling vocals are then accompanied by the distinctive strums of the ukulele. The supporting keyboard, weeping violin, deep plucking mandolin and more, unite to create a leisurely ambience. All this before the fast paced drums add a more lively, catchy chorus where the vocals become a zestful release of emotions. Then the drums ease off during the verses to highlight the storytelling vocals once again.

For me, the standout element in this song, apart from the undeniable talent, is the continual collision of two worlds, like smoke screens appearing then disappearing. Firstly, the slow then fast rhythmic tempo of the song captivates and draws you in further and further. Secondly, the upbeat feeling of the song on a superficial level contradicts the very personal, ominous story being told in the lyrics. Again, this story draws you in!

They found you in the river,
When you die you never shiver,
You’re alone,
In the mirror, in the mirror.

Discussing the song, In the Mirror, the band Benedikt explains, “It’s about a personal story of friendship. The lyrics are about a close friend of the band who got severely injured after a drowning accident. Wrapped in fast-paced drums and dark, atmospheric orchestration, it explores hazy, adolescent memories and the joys and struggles of growing up together.”

This nine-piece Norwegian ensemble which is Benedikt is led by Hans Olav Settem. The other Oslo based members include: Simen Mitlid (guitar and banjo), Sindre Skår (bass), Brage Kristian Einum (keyboards), Oddbjørn Sponås (drums), Emilie Catrin Korsvold (trombone and vocals), Marit Othilie Thorvik (vocals), Sunniva Lilian Shaw of Tordarroch (cello and vocals) and Stein Boge (trumpet and guitar). Basically a complete orchestra in their own right!

Their first album called Balcony Dream was recently released in 2021. Don’t hesitate to explore all the works of this amazing nonet!
