Mathilda Homer – Rock Bottom – Acoustic

The acoustic version of Mathilda Holmer‘s song Rock Bottom is an absolute must listen to. It is addictive! The singer-songwriter’s gorgeous raspy vocals will take your breath away. At times calm and smooth, at others urgent and desperate, the sentiments are palpable. So put your headphones on and be immersed in the emotion!

The deep but warm piano chords in the background provide a setting for the amazing vocals, which clearly take centre stage in this acoustic piece, Rock Bottom. The deliberate mix of staccato then legato piano playing creates an almost haunting ambience, certainly a pillar for Mathilda Holmer‘s captivating gravelly voice. Her vocal range has been exploited in this composition. The highs and lows will take you on a ride like a rollercoaster.

The lyrics broach the desperation felt when realising that your relationship has come to its term, however you feel caught in the past, unable to move on. No longer living, but existing in a union. A problematic known to many of us I’m sure.

Scratching at the sides, nothing really works

Caught in the lights, caught in the heat, caught in the loss
Caught in the dark, caught in the worst memories of us

Adding enlightenment to this phenomenal creation which is Rock Bottom, Mathilda Holmer commented, “It’s realising that it really couldn’t get much worse, but something keeps you there, maybe it’s the familiarity of that person. Trying to fight for something that you know can’t go back to how it used to. Only talking about good memories and not making new ones but you don’t want to move on, because it’s all you know.”
