No Monster Club – Case By Case Basis
Nowadays, the world is going faster and faster, always going ahead, with constant innovations rising up almost every day. However, in this overboosted society, there is one place where time has no impact for decades now, an isolated island in an ocean of progress, a shelter against modernity… and this is… bureaucracy! I can see some of you smiling already, but make no mistake, these masters in inefficiency do follow a strict training and, very often, the hot air blowing ninjas will win the fight against you from exhaustion, especially if you happen to be an international couple applying for a visa. Oooohh their favorite prey! The song Case By Case Basis by No Monster Club was inspired by one of these picturesque confrontations. It is the tenth track of the band’s new LP deadbeat effervescent to be released this February 11th, so put your headphones on guys!
The trio from Dublin, Ireland, is composed of Sir Bobby Jukebox (bass, keys, vocals), Tim Falcon Prime (drums, background vocals) and Mark “Ginnels” Chester (guitar). They also team up with Kelly O’Donohue (brass) on this track.
Sir Bobby Jukebox commented for headphonik: “‘Case by Case Basis’ was inspired by me and my partner’s hellish experiences with visa applications and bureaucratic red tape. I’m Irish and she’s Australian, so for the past few years we’ve had to live in whichever country would allow us to live there at any given time. There’s very little freedom of choice granted when you pair up with somebody from outside of your parish, which is obviously ridiculous given how small the world has become this century.
That’s why we’ve got one extremely sardonic chorus here, that maybe even borders on irritating in its repetition… to reflect the annoyance of receiving endless auto-reply emails and being told either ‘you can’t live here anymore’ or ‘you’ll find out our decision in the next 6-24 months, once we’ve sifted through hundreds of pages of alleged evidence that you are an actual couple’. And obviously this is only my own personal experience, and it goes without saying that the whole process is unspeakably worse for so many other people.“
Been there? Wait, this is even worse for family members or international sweethearts now that Mister C. entered the game!
Sir Bobby added “I came up with the melody and half-wrote the song while living down under, which is why it probably has a bit of a Flying Nun/Dolewave vibe to it. The chorus pre-dates Covid, which is interesting given that the phrase “case by case basis” has been experiencing a real renaissance over the past two years. It’s one of those awful, empty, fobbing-off terms that you’ll only ever hear politicians saying… or, of course, me.“
The band describes deadbeat effervescent as “a patiently produced, surprisingly lucid, meticulously crafted, joyous slice of bizarro Art Pop“. This song has definitely a happy beat and it will re-energise you whether you’re facing red-tape evils or not, so check it out and sing it loud!
