Pina Palau – Swallow The Pain

Swallow The Pain from Pina Palau is about female competition with an underlying irony… wow… minefield topic! I’m telling you, I’m not going there, nope. Let’s talk about music instead. On this track, you’ll like the Americana kind of style with heavy distorted guitars and fat drumming. So put your headphones on and listen to Pina’s story!

I love Pina Palau. And, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that because we live 225 kms apart from each other, which is tiny on the planet’s scale. No, no, what touches me the most in Pina’s work is her authenticity. Every note she plays, every word she sings is genuine, it comes from her heart and you can truly feel it. She’s passionate… which, I admit, is sort of a recurrent type of character in her scope of work. Still, some artists convey emotions better than others and Pina Palau is someone who, even though you don’t know her, gives the impression you are part of her intimate circle, like she sings this song just for you.
Also, I love the production of her songs, they are not computerly sterilised and there is a bit of dirtiness in them. A “roots” effect. I don’t know if you listened to the Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin lately but their tempos were varying a lot within a song and that’s what made them great bands to my mind. It was genuine and emotional. Like Pina.

Swallow The Pain is a great folk/rock song. The drums and guitars are the stars of the song alongside Pina Palau‘s unique voice. The drums are played with a laid-back feeling full of ghost notes with a loosened skin on the kick drum which gives a fat effect. The guitars are plural, distorted, with a clear reverb sound on the chorus. The bass is played with a pick, probably by a guitarist 😁, and has a bit of distortion as well.

Pina Palau is also a very good storyteller in her lyrics and Swallow The Pain is no exception.
I have a good idea about myself, as a woman, and I don’t want to be boxed into any type of stereotypes or reduced to my looks! When I read the lyrics to this song, for the first time, without the music, I could feel the underlying jealousy. When I played it for my co-producer, Mario Hänni – and he knows me well! – the first thing that he said was that we need to make sure that the underlying irony is legible! That’s why we added the distorted guitar! To symbolise female power and the strength and drive to resist conformity!“, she says about the track.

Swallow The Pain is the second single on Pina Palau‘s debut EP called Super Ego. The EP includes four awesome songs, all very different from one another but faithful to the folk universe of Pina Palau. Go check it out!
