Zoe Sparks – Friends With You

From start to finish, a funky vibe is released from the song, Friends With You by Zoe Sparks. The silvery smooth vocals of Sparks followed by the acoustic guitar strums at the beginning of the track, set the tone. They are quickly accompanied by the bass and drums at the 20 second mark, injecting a higher degree of funk. A little further on, percussion and clapping join in making a crescendo of, you guessed it, funk! And if you think it stops there then you are mistaken. A rich electric guitar solo with effects and slaps supported throughout by the bass amplifies the groovy rhythm of this song. Then you find yourself singing the lyrics and moving about in an uninhibited fashion.

Los Angeles born and bred, Zoe Sparks declared on social media that, “Sometimes it takes a good fall to know where you stand.” The song Friends With You is testament to this notion. Who wants to stay only friends with a love interest? Being friend zoned is certainly a sharp pill to swallow and as this Californian bassist describes, “a good fall”. The song touches on that all too common occurrence of feeling a connection with someone which is not reciprocated.

I can’t be myself around you,
I don’t want to be friends with you no more,
And there’s so much that I can’t ignore
We can never be friends cause I want more.

Friends With You is a must for those funk loving folk out there. Yet to be assigned to an album, keep an eye and an ear out for further releases from Zoe Sparks.
