Del Water Gap – Alone Together

Unlike many artists, Samuel Holden Jaffe, aka Del Water Gap, always starts a song with words, and you can definitely feel a surrounding intimacy with the artist when you listen to Alone Together. The notes of the minimalist guitar emphasised by the bass make you focus on the hidden darkness of the voice only disturbed by those high G and Eb, like a lighthouse on the ocean at night.
The title of the song itself witnessed a taste for literature as Alone Together represents a perfect oxymoron which is a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction, some other examples are “silent scream” or “only choice”.

The song addresses the theme of underlying loneliness in a stagnant relationship and the introversion of the Connecticut artist, now based in Brooklyn, reflects directly in these words. Jaffe recently declared to Interview Magazine: “When we’re struggling—whether with anxiety, loneliness, or addiction—often we get this horrible solipsistic feeling, like, ‘No one else could possibly feel this bad.’ A lot of my recent work has come from that feeling, and it has been very cathartic to see it resonate with a lot of other people.“

This is a beautiful and sentimental piece of music for which Del Water Gap is helped by Samia, singing background vocals. It is part of the eponymous album Del Water Gap released last October.
We hope you’ll like the beautiful tragedy of this song… yeah… another oxymoron…
