French Cassettes – Santa Cruz Tomorrow

Warning: if you are suffering from insomnia, or you are in lack of melatonin, not the Phoria song, the hormone thing, you should probably not listen to Santa Cruz Tomorrow from French Cassettes as it could be a bit frustrating. Although, if you are curious and you like super groovy pop, you should probably make an exception. So, come on, put your headphones on and wake up!

French Cassettes is a San Francisco bay area band composed of vocalist Scott Huerta, bassist (and brother) Thomas Huerta, drummer Rob Mills and guitarist/producer Mackenzie Bunch. Claiming inspiration from artists such as Cake, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Magnetic Fields or The Strokes, the band released an album in 2020 called Rolodex on which you can find Santa Cruz Tomorrow and seven other great pop songs.
You can definitely hear all the aforementioned influences on this album and even older ones like The Beatles (ok, knowing their musical influencing spectrum, this one was easy I admit), The Kinks or The Animals.
When I played on Dixie Lane (1st track of Rolodex) for instance, I thought I was listening to The Strokes!

I was very impressed by the quality of this Rolodex album, which I did not know (shame on me!), and specifically by the variety contained in these eight songs. The French Cassettes have the ability to take you in a different part of their universe on every track. It’s like they have a house in their dreams and they take you to another room on every single.

One of the reasons which could explain this diversity is that the band took a while to put together this amazing album, as Scott Huerta said to The Luna Collective magazine: “… the truth is some of these songs were written almost 5 years ago. Been working on them for a while. They were just demos I recorded on Garageband for most of that time and we finished recording the final versions right around when quarantine started.

In the French Cassettes dream house, Santa Cruz Tomorrow can undoubtedly be found behind the bedroom door and, of course, this door is only opening in the middle of the night.
Most of the song came from fooling around on my friend’s Omnichord, which has a sound that’s pretty hard not to love,” says Huerta. “So I tried to keep that charm when writing the rest of the track’s instruments. I was obviously sleep deprived to feel like singing about the end of a past relationship and a fifth grade project I made on the Donner Party in the same song. As well, I had just asked my roommate what the hottest pepper in the world is, and wanted to slip that into the lyrics at the beginning… ‘So. Carolina Reaper.’
Ok… I agree the lyrics are probably not going to win a Pulitzer prize, but the vocal arrangements, the bass line, the guitar parts and the minimalist yet funky drums will definitely take you to this mysterious bedroom!

If you like shockingly good pop/rock songs with that same colour we could find at the end of the 90s, early 2000s, you must listen to Rolodex. I have not listened to such a great pop/rock album for a long time.
So, put your headphones on and Rolodex yourself now!
