Lizzie Reid – Cubicle

Lizzie Reid is the wee lass responsible for creating the little gem of a song which is Cubicle. I must say, being inspired by a cubicle, to write a song is not something I could imagine myself doing. But that is the amazing yet bewildering thing about such talented artists, they get inspired everywhere! So put your headphones on, lock the door and wash your hands after listening!

The debut of this offering by Lizzie Reid, Cubicle, with the gentle strumming of the acoustic guitar coupled with Lizzie’s soothing humming, puts one instantly at ease. As the song progresses, the musicality gradually intensifies, in particular the gorgeous violin tugs at the heart strings. Even the humming intensifies until you realise that you too are humming and singing along.

So who is Lizzie Reid? She is a Scottish singer-songwriter and bassist who has been on the Glasgow music scene for a number of years. Having formerly been a member of various groups, like indie rock band CRYSTAL (now known as Dead Pony), Reid decided to follow her instincts and create her own style of music. And what a good decision that was because she has garnered much attention since.

I can’t escape this night,
I’m in the cubicle.
Through the window,
The sweet unbearable.
Blood on his hands,
Blood in my pants.
Your new girl,
Thinks I’m beautiful.

I just love the poetic force behind lyrics such as ‘The sweet unbearable’ but what is the track Cubicle actually about? Well who better to tell us than the author herself. Lizzie Reid once told the website gigwise, «I wrote this song in tears the morning after a very emotionally-demanding night out. I wasn’t sure if I was the happiest I had ever been, or if I was completely heartbroken. I don’t know how it’s even possible to confuse the two. I locked myself in a toilet cubicle of an underground jazz bar in Glasgow. I was having a bit of a panic attack and knew I needed to calm down before facing the rest of night. This evening marked the end of something, and the beginning of something else.»

If we want to admit it or not, feeling confused about our emotions is not uncommon and totally relatable to many. If you are hooked on the enchanting tale which is Cubicle then you can check it out, as well as Lizzie Reid‘s other spellbinding tales, which appear on her debut EP titled Cubicle, I know just as the song. Go on, give it a go, you may actually find your new favourite artist!
