Lucius – Next to Normal

There is one thing I’m 99% sure right now, and that is, if you are reading these lines, you are human and not some sort of AI thing. So, if you are in the flesh and bones category like me, then you are inherently social. That means you have friends. That also means you probably suffered a bit these last two years or so, and you had time to think about what’s important in life. Today’s song from Lucius, Next to Normal, is the lead single of Lucius’s third LP Second Nature, which is thematically focusing on these changes you may have had in your existence already or you’re planning to make in your post-pandemic future.
This LP is Lucius‘s first release since Good Grief in 2016 and Wildewoman in 2014. The band is composed of two wonderful singers: Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe. The record also features guests like Sheryl Crow and Brandi Carlile on backing vocals.

About Second Nature, Jess Wolfe commented: “It is a record that begs you not to sit in the difficult moments, but to dance through them. It touches upon all these stages of grief—and some of that is breakthrough, by the way. Being able to have the full spectrum of the experience that we have had, or that I’ve had in my divorce, or that we had in lockdown, having our careers come to a halt, so to speak. I think you can really hear and feel the spectrum of emotion and hopefully find the joy in the darkness.

I was just mistaken
Turns out, I wasn’t crazy at all
I just had some walls up
That needed breaking
When I’m close to you, I’m next to normal
I feel immortal
I’m high without the paranoia

Second Nature is set to be released on April 8th this year… It has a special meaning for me, as I was born the same day a few (and more) years ago, and I’m also next to normal! Unbelievable.

Next to Normal is a back-to-the-future kind of songs, lying between various musical dimensions, the bass and percussions reminds me of funk ambassadors like Earth, Wind and Fire, the vocals, keyboards and drums make me think of a Bee Gees disco hit, some few (and more) years ago. And the whole has definitely a pop colour, an easy listening wrapping which makes it very addictive and you might, indeed, listen to it eternally.
