Yard Act – Land Of The Blind

Land Of The Blind from Yard Act is a punk-rock song about the art of illusion which even includes a magic trick. One thing is for sure though, there is something subliminal with this song as the bass line hypnotised me and made me want to listen to more of Yard Act! So put your headphones on and repeat after me “Ba ba ba, ba-ba-baow”!

In case you have not recognised the accent in Land Of The Blind, Yard Act is a British band from Leeds founded by vocalist James Smith and bassist Ryan Needham who were joined later by guitarist Sam Shjipstone and drummer Jay Russell.
The group is “one to watch” in the BBC’s Sound of 2022 shortlist and you can understand why when you listen to their creative and distinctive work.
Their music reminded me of the musical punch in the face I received when I started listening to The Clash or The Stranglers back in the time.

Land Of The Blind has this mesmerising plectrum played bass line which will haunt you for days, especially when you associate it with the backing vocals. The solid and minimalist drums adds the final captivating element to this atmospheric tableau where James Smith’s storytelling is supported by the effective clear sound electric guitar.

James Smith explains about the single, “Land Of The Blind is a song about the art of illusion and how self-confidence can really inspire conviction in a trick. Confidence is such a powerful tool and we are so often willing to believe what we are told by the most confident people in the room because the alternative of doubting them is to exhaust ourselves labouring the point by trying to talk louder than them. Nobody wants that. Most people just want to get on with enjoying their short lives with as little stress as they possibly can. So, exhausting as it still is, closing your eyes whilst you let the mad bastards do their stupid tricks often seems the most reasonable price to pay.”

Yard Act released their debut album The Overload in January this year in which Land Of The Blind is the 7th track. They have also just re-pressed their first EP Dark Days in silver edition.
Incredibly, in The Overload album, there is a song called 100% Endurance for which they recently collaborated with Sir Elton John to launch a version 2.
A true magic trick.
