Sunflower Bean – Baby Don’t Cry

Sunflower Bean‘s recently released single Baby Don’t Cry will have you tapping your feet and rocking your head, or perhaps even moving backwards and forwards thus changing your GPS coordinates at a constant rate. This cleverly crafted indie-rock piece exudes a uniqueness that shouldn’t be missed so put your headphones on and start swaying around the room!

Baby Don’t Cry by Sunflower Bean has all the parts of a full bodied rock song. It has the catchy and every changing guitar riffs which are the backbone of the song (I especially like the slide sounds between notes). It has the reverberating drum pounding which is the heart of the number. And of course the superb, salient vocals which act as the blood flowing around this anatomy. What is more, the use of echoing effects and resonating sounds adds a punk feel to the song which certainly draws you in.

Sunflower Bean is a New York / Boston rock trio consisting of Julia Cumming (bass, lead vocals), Nick Kivlen (guitars, backing vocals), and Olive Faber (drums). And if you wondered where their original name came from… well it was inspired by Kivlen’s love of Sunflower seeds and Faber’s love of coffee beans!

Baby Don’t Cry, although essentially a sad, heart tugging, breakup song actually has an encouraging anthem feel to it. The echoing Baby Don’t Cry mantra gets you through even the most mundane daily duties such as cooking dinner (albeit for one) to listening to the radio. That touch of strength and defiance urges even the most down hearted and defeated to push through those difficult times.

About the song Baby Don’t Cry, Sunflower Bean stated, “So many things in our lives are disposable. Content and news is consumed and discarded leaving us unfulfilled. “Baby Don’t Cry” is about enjoying the real. The things right in front of us that give us meaning and how sometimes, even sad songs can give you that warm feeling of hope.”
