Rat Tally – Spinning Wheel

Spinning Wheel is the first single to be released from Rat Tally‘s debut long play titled In My Car. This deliciously melancholic yet feisty piece is a must for your summer playlist. The punchy indie pop track, Spinning Wheel will have you turning round and round and round. So put your headphones on and prepare to get dizzy!

Rat Tally is the moniker of the music project fronted by Addy Harris. Harris is a Chicago born and bred singer-songwriter (by way of LA and Boston) who is a Berklee College of Music alumni. She states on her socials that she likes, “Writing sad music for sad people. Or happy people. Or whoever.” That surely must encompass you, as well as me, as well as everyone!

Gentle guitar plucking starts the single Spinning Wheel, quickly joined by some discerning, riveting drum pounding. Soon an intriguing and dazzling soundscape forms with various solos and ever changing rhythms to keep us on our toes or at least keep our ears peeled. Addy Harris’s feathery sweet vocals bring everything together perfectly.

I’m seeing stars
Didn’t look away fast enough
Guess you left your mark
When I lose it I’ll send my regards
It’s like I’m anchored to the round-a-bout
That spinning wheel at the playground
And you get closer with every cycle
Getting off becomes consequential.

Yet this seemingly pearly pop piece, Spinning Wheel by Rat Tally, appears to touch on a darker more wistful topic. Perhaps an argument, a disagreement, some sort of provocation, or even a full on fight! The insightful lyrics are enough to have anyone twirling, whirling around and spinning out of control.
